SAFE HAVEN

Writer's picture: SometimesSheWritesSometimesSheWrites

By definition, a safe haven is a place of refuge or security. I argue that it could be a person or activity that fosters feelings of refuge and a sense of security.

For over a year now the slogan of this site ‘Sometimes She Writes’ has been ‘Writing is my Safe Haven’

One of my favourite movies is actually Safe haven starring Julian hough and Josh Duhamel. The soundtrack, the storyline, and the small town it was filmed all captured my heart. I’ve always been drawn to the romance of a story born in a place that feels like love.

I think that’s why I loved Mauritius so much. It was the small-town feeling that made me think of the possibilities of love on every corner and hope on every street. The romance was beneath the sand, in the water, lining the sky and hung with the stars.

If you can’t already tell, I’m a hopeless romantic.

My writing is romanticized by the light I see in the mundane. Whereas my interactions are guarded by the devastation I know loving can often bear.

The contradiction of me being a realist to a pessimistic fault and simultaneously being hopeful in the force of loves nature continues to prove that two things can be true at once.

Two things can be true without one negating the other. I see towns of love filled with hope and dreamy futures. I also see streets of fear-filled with darkness and looming assault.

But here my safe haven lies. Here in the moments, the dolphins swim in sync and light glistens across the cerulean sea, here where I am surrounded by nations of people bonded by faith kindness, and laughter- I sink into my safe haven (The place & The people)

The haven of authenticity. Where I can be myself. Where I can grow in love and give from a place of love. Writing then becomes my safe haven because I am able to intertwine all the loves that make me feel whole and safe.

As I write I am able to wrap all of these neatly with a bow designed in word linen and tied with lyrical silk. Writing is the verb that has always felt like a place.

Writing is my safe haven.

Sincerely,

Sometimes She Writes.
